Chapter Thirty-Seven

We talked a long time, reassuring each other. We made love again.

“Have you talked of this with her, Otter?” I asked.

“A little. She was concerned as to whether you would accept it.”

Now you can realize, you men especially ... I was on very thin ice here. I must agree with Otter in her conclusion that this was the best decision for Plum Flower. Yet I must not seem too enthusiastic. But in the warm glow of our romantic evening, I was made to think that it was possible. We had all lived closely together for a year, and were familiar with each other's ways. All of us would miss Lone Walker, but in some ways both Otter and I could help Flower to keep his memory alive.

Already we were beginning to remember and talk about some of the happy times that we had shared. One of us would remember something that he had done or said, and we would chuckle together over it. And, though the idea was hardly settled in our minds, we would soon have a part of Walker with us in Flower's child. I was made to think that the three of us could make a good life together.

“But, Otter, you will have to help me,” I told her. “Only you can keep this working well.”

She snuggled close and gave me a quick hug. “It will take all of us, Pup. But we can do it together.” She tossed back the robe. “Now, we should get back to camp. It will be time to feed the baby.”

With the advice of No Tail Dog, we planned how we would deal with Bull's Horn. Dog would approach him and tell him of Flower's decision. Then offer to negotiate any exchange of goods that Bull's Horn thought appropriate.

I did not know what to expect. I was very uneasy over Horn's reaction. He might demand a fight.

“I have thought about this,” Dog told me. “You are a holy man among your people and would not be expected to answer such a challenge. Is it not so?”

“That is true,” I agreed.

“Then Horn should respect your ways.”

“But he seems not to, Dog.”

“If he refuses to do so, we can take it before the council. It is really a private matter, but that would make Bull's Horn look ridiculous. No, I am made to think that he will be happy to sell any rights he has, or thinks he has, with Plum Flower.”

Dog also pointed out to me in private that in bargaining he could use Flower's pregnancy to good advantage. I was a little upset over that.

“That is a good thing, Dog,” I told him. “She carries the child of your friend and mine, Lone Walker.”

“And for you or me or Flower, it is good,” he agreed. “But we are bargaining here, Pup. You are a trader. You know how it is, and how Bull's Horn is. Her pregnancy is not only a good thing for us, but a good talking point when I deal with Horn.
